Masdanza – International Contemporary Dance Festival of The Canary Islands

The 26th International Contemporary Dance Festival of The Canary Islands , Masdanza 8-31 October 2021.

Starting in 2021 the Festival will be based in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, previously held in Maspalomas.

MASDANZA, in its 26th edition will have more than twenty activities including workshops, competitions and exhibitions. El Parque Juan Pablo II, la Plaza de Santa Ana, la Gallera del López Socas, el Castillo de Mata and the theaters Guiniguada, Cuyás y Pérez Galdós will be some of the new stages of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance of the Canary Islands

MASDANZA presents within its program the Solo and Choreography Contests in its Official Section, and also, different sections during the week: Masdanza Dunes, Masdanza cinema, cultural breaks, dance in open spaces and workshops. In addition to the above, Masdanza organises the Extensions Tour with stops in the different islands of the Canarian archipelago with a selection of the finalists who participated in the Official Section of the Festival. Through the national and international Collaboration Agreements signed by Masdanza, the artists are provided with the opportunity to opt for artistic residencies, performances and collaborations.

Fiestas de San Rafael 2021 – Vecindario

Patron festivities of San Rafael in Vecindario, in the municipality of Santa Lucia de Tirajana 15-24 October 2021.

Frontón King – Bodyboarding World Tour in Gáldar

Gáldar will host a new edition of the Gran Canaria Frontón King, the most prestigious professional bodyboarding event on the Bodyboarding World Tour. The beach of El Frontón will host between 16 to 30 October the most important event on the world calendar.

In this 2021 edition, the international championship will be held again in the World Cup format, in the open, women’s, and the world championship in junior category modalities. That is precisely the novelty of this year, the coronation of the new ProJunior world champion of the Bodyboarding World Tour 2021.

Thanks to the current levels of incidence of the virus in the Canary Islands, the health authorities have authorized a maximum capacity of 1,000 spectators, complying with all the protocols that guarantee an event with maximum security for all attendees.

The competition will be held in the open and female categories, with the attraction of having the most outstanding riders on the international scene, such as the current world champion, Tristan Robert, Pierre Louis Costes or Amaury Lavherne in the open category, while the representation in Females is led by the current world tour champion, Sari Ohhara, Isabella Sousa and Alexandra Rinder. They will be joined by the best national and local riders. Names such as Jonathan Vega, William Lujan, Dailos Rodríguez or Armide Soliveres in men, while, in women, Teresa Padilla and Lara Ascanio will be the heads of series of the Canarian representation.

The final culmination of the World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King will be the dispute for the world crown in the ProJunior category, where the Tenerife David Pérez arrives in Gran Canaria as the leader after his victory a few weeks ago in Portugal in the Sintra Pro2021. He will be joined by international riders of the stature of Gabriel Castro da Silva, Joel Rodrigues and Louka Zaninotto, among others, who will fight to become the best promise in world bodyboarding.

The 34th South Festival – Three Continent Theater Encounter in Agüimes

The 34th edition of the Three Continents Theater Meeting will be held in Agüimes from October 20 to 24, with the participation of companies from Mali, Morocco, Argentina, Spain and the Canary Islands.

Performing artists from Europe, Africa and Latin America will congregate again this October in the municipality of Agüimes within the framework of the 34th edition of the Festival del Sur – Encuentro Teatral Tres Continentes, the most veteran theater festival in the Canary Islands and one of the most reputed on the national scene. The festival will take place from October 20 to 24, in the three main theaters of the municipality –Teatro Municipal, Teatro Auditorio Agüimes and Teatro Cruce de Culturas del Cruce de Arinaga–, to which are added this year as a novelty the outdoor venues installed in the Plaza del Rosario and in the Plaza del Teatro Auditorio.

The most anticipated performance of the Festival will be the one starring the consecrated Argentine actor Héctor Alterio, who at the age of 92 will celebrate his 73rd anniversary on stage in Agüimes, since he made his debut in Buenos Aires in 1948.

Maspalomas Market

On Saturday and Wednesdays, all kinds of textile articles flood the car park Municipal Market, located on Avenida Alejandro del Castillo. It is one of the markets most attractive for tourists; El Mercadillo de Maspalomas, ‘Maspalomas market’. The market is from 08:00 to 14:00.

At the Maspalomas Market, dozens of vendors offer visitors clothing, footwear, handbags, wallets, costume jewellery, leather and handmade jewellery, among many other products. There is also an area, to enjoy a refreshment, set up for authorised vehicles to prepare and sell food and drink.

Rock & Books Festival 2021 – Agaete, Mogán & Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The Rock & Books Festival 2021 starts in the municipality of Agaete. Until now the festival has only focused on the capital but this year the festival has expanded the calender and locations and perhaps sets to become a cultural event to be enjoyed in multiple places on Gran Canaria.

On September 17-18, Puerto de Las Nieves will sound like electric guitars, literature will be discussed and in the key of reading through concerts and the numerous bookstalls that will be installed in the upper part of the shopping centre Las Nieves. For its part, in one of the free spaces on the main street, the stage for the performances and the seating area for the public will be arranged, who will access the venue in strict order of arrival. Each day the performance of three musical bands is expected. In this way, the organization will ensure compliance with the COVID health protocol.

The Rock & Books Festival will move on October 1 and 2 to Arguineguín in Mogán. To close its cultural circuit on October 29 and November 6 in Plaza de Santa Ana, in the capital of Gran Canaria. Agricultural market Plaza de Playa de Arinaga

Farmers’ market in Plaza de Playa de Arinaga on Fridays 08:00-14:00, just in front of the church church Nuestra Señora del Pino – Arinaga. The municipality of Agüimes new Agricultural market, starting from Friday, July 2 for direct sales. It will initially consist of a dozen zero kilometre stalls, in which the farmers themselves will offer their products directly to visitors, without intermediaries: locally produced fruits, vegetables and vegetables that can be purchased at a fair price.

These stands will be accompanied by other complementary products like flowers, crafts, gift items or textiles. The new market in Playa de Arinaga will be open every Friday, between 08:00 and 14:00. It will be the second popular market in the municipality of Agüimes, along with the one that already takes place every Thursday in the Plaza de las Ramblas, in Agüimes casco.

The initiative, promoted by the Consumption area of the Agüimes City Council, aims to boost commerce in Playa de Arinaga. It will be a meeting place between farmers and consumers, beneficial for both. While the former will have the opportunity to output their production, the latter will have easy access to quality local products.

San Mateo Weekend Market

The weekend market of Vega de San Mateo in the mountains is a popular place to visit by locals and visitors with its over 90 stalls ( currently reduced due COVID-19).

Open from Friday to Sunday you can find a big market warehouse building as well as outside stalls and occasional music and dancing during summer. Local farmers selling a wide selection of seasonal vegetables, fruit but also cheese, wine and much more. Outside area offers stalls selling an interesting array of different products from handcrafts, clothes, bags among others.

 

The market and surrounding area is undergoing major renovations and improvements. The opening of an underground parking on la Plaza del Mercado – Los Gofiones ( just after the little bus station ) has improved the traffic and parking on a busy day like a market day.

On Friday and Saturday 08:00 – 20:00 and on Sunday 09:00 – 14:30 

 

At the same time take the opportunity to stroll along the old quarter of the Vega de San Mateo, visit the Parish Church, located in the Calle Principal and enjoy a lovely lunch in one of the restaurants near by.

Friday Market – Playa de Mogán

The popular Friday Market restarted in Playa de Mogán from October 1. This has got to be the most scenic places on Gran Canaria to have a market, by the beach and a harbour, beautifully kept houses and shops, bars and restaurants galore. A really lovely way for visitors staying in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, Anfi or Arguineguín to get there is by ferry. The market is 09:00-14:00.

5th Intercultural Festival of Gran Canaria – La Aldea

La Aldea hosts the 5º Festival Intercultural del Gran Canaria on Friday, October 29 in Plaza La Alameda
Around 98 artists belonging to six delegations, and two based on Gran Canaria will participate in this culture event, organized by the Cultural Association of the Canary Islands School of Music and Dance and the Department of Culture of the City Council of the Aldea de San Nicolás, directed by Cleofé Cubas.

The entrance to the show will be free with limited capacity. As of Monday, October 25, you can get tickets, between 12:00 to 13:00 from the hall of the Municipal Center of Culture.

The Folk Music and Dance Encounter continue faithful to its fundamental purpose of seeking through dance and music, between the various regions of Spain and the world, an intercultural dialogue that allows the enrichment of dance knowledge and the transmission of the same to the new generations, thus ensuring the preservation of cultural traditions and expanding their possibilities to carry out new stage productions each time, in accordance with current demands.
