It’s International Women’s Day weekend with official celebrations happening on Sunday, 8th of March. AEMET, the Spanish state meteorological agency, is predicting unpredictable weather for Friday in the north of Gran Canaria and at the summits but with weather expected to get better and better as we head toward Sunday which is looking to be a perfect hot and sunny March day.
It’s a super busy weekend ahead with local and European cheeses on offer in Valleseco. Loads of Carnival festivities happening around the island including the start of the Maspalomas carnival celebrations. Big sporting events taking place, a quick painting contest in Puerto de Mogán and so much more. It’s going to be a fabulous weekend to be on #GranCanaria; here are our top picks for the days ahead.
5-15 MARCH, MASPALOMAS
MASPALOMAS CARNIVAL
The southern tourist enclave Maspalomas celebrate ten days of carnival from 5-15 March. The theme this year is “Musicals”, voted on by popular vote for the first time. All shows are to be held on stage in the Playa del Inglés shopping centre Yumbo.
On Thursday, the opening show of the carnival starts from 20:00. This is followed by Drag Queen pre-selection event at 20:45
On Friday, election of the senior Queen at 20:00 and a “Mogollón” street party from 23:00
On Saturday, Children’s Carnival with parade at 17:00. One of the main novelties this year is the celebration, for the first time in the municipality, of a children’s parade. The event is specifically designed to appeal to members of the family of all ages, in a safe environment of fun and frolic. The parade will take place around the Yumbo shopping centre. At 19:00 the election of the Children’s Carnival Queen is followed by a “Mogollón” party for older participants starting at 23:00 to end the festivities for Saturday.

The 6th annual body painting contest in the Shopping Centre Bellavista in San Fernando de Maspalomas.
The contest starts at 11:00 with artists working furiously against the clock until 16:30, when they must finish their work. visitors to this popular locals shopping centre can watch live, as various body paint artists compete for the most creative paint job on the skin of another human. At 17:00 there will be a Gala event, where each of the works will be presented to a jury. Each presentation is accompanied by a musical performance, eash limited to no more than 3 minutes in duration.

EL CARNAVAL DE BARRIOS
The main Carnival celebrations throughout the municipality of Mogán are on this year between 17-22 March, and “Carnival in the neighbourhood” events and festivities start this weekend to help get you in the mood.
This Friday in Motor Grande, Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, plaza Don Agustín López Álamo will be filled with music, colour and glitter from 17:00 with a children’s costume party at which there will be chocolate and carnival tortillas, makeup workshops , animation and a carnival fashion catwalk show.
On Saturday, El Horno ( GC-500) will have a children’s evening of costumes, starting at 21:00 the concert of the local Moganero singer Pedro Manuel Afonso and the verbena “party” with Paco Guedes.
The carnival will also reverberate through the historic centre of Mogán this Saturday from 21:30 with a parade that will depart from the Valle de Mogán Sports Complex to the rhythm music of the Samba Isleña batucada. The tour will end in Plaza Sarmiento y Coto where you can enjoy musical performances in to the early hours.
On Sunday, the little ones in the family can enjoy a costume party at 17:00 in parque Nicolás Quesada ( casco de Mogán).
The 21st edition of the sporting event “Transgrancanaria” cross country mountain running race is happening from 4 to 8 March 2020. Gran Canaria will once again be the trail’s stage and will welcome the world’s best runners in what is billed as one of the toughest mountain running challenges in the world.
The Maspalomas Lighthouse will host the spectacular finish line gathering on the beach for the main races. During the main day, Saturday, you can expect a lot of people in the area with the first arrivals coming in from their over night race around 09:30 in the morning and continuing until early afternoon. After the resounding success achieved in the two previous editions, held in Moya and Artenara, this year 2020, the third edition of the European Cheese Fair will be held in Valleseco. The aim is to turn this sector into a strategic axis of local economic regional development closely linked to the tourism sector.
European cheeses will once again be the stars of this Fair held on March 7 and 8, 2020, organised by the Commonwealth of the North and the town hall of Valleseco, in collaboration with the European Cheese Route Association.

The seaside tourist area and neighbourhood of Playa de Mogán will once more its streets filled on Saturday, March 7 with brushes and easels. The 10th edition of the popular rapid painting contest organised by the town hall of Mogán brings together artists of various nationalities who must carry out a singular work, in a short set period of time, free style, that deals with the landscape, monuments or people of this Mogañero enclave.
The contest is open for anyone who wants to join on the day starting from 08:00. Each participant must pay €5 and be over 16 years old. Children under this age may also participate but are not included in the prize contest. Each artist must bring the materials necessary for the realisation of their work and an easel for later exhibition. Each canvas should be within a minimum 50 cm and a maximum of 120 cm on any of its sides, it should be white and without textures on its surface. Any previously used will not be accepted, while those that use watercolour paper or similar should come mounted in a frame or rigid support.
At 9:00 the painters start and have limited time until 15:00 to finish and then their works are placed in exhibition. These works may be of any style and technique, but will have to be focused on the landscape, monuments or people of this town. At 18:00, the jury’s decision will be announced.
The organisers will award the main prize – the first will be 1,300 euros, the second 500 euros. The seven runners-up valued at 300 euros will be given directly by the sponsors. Carnival celebrations in Santa Lucia come to an end this Saturday in Vecindario with the parade and burning of the Sardine. The theme for this year has been “Africa”. Saturday, the big Day, Mogollón del Carnaval, will witness a carnival parade starting at 18:30, from Balos to El Doctoral. The day will end with the reading of the testament, funeral of the Sardine and music performances from Son del Caney and Star Music. The fun starts at 22:30 at the back of the teatro Victor Jara.

The municipality of Moya have been celebrating their carnival themed simply “Carnaval Te Quiero” this year. Festivities come to an end this weekend with a carnival parade and a big party on Saturday.
On Saturday, “encuentro de Murgas” ( popular cultural manifestation musical theatre satire with a political overtone) at 12:00 in parque Pico Lomito (in front of the tourism office)
At 17:00 the parade starts in front of the church Nuestra Señora Candelaria via calle Miguel Hernández and all the way to parque Pico Lomito. After, starting at 18:00 there are concerts at the park until late.
SUNDAY 8 MARCH, MOGÁN
CARRERA POPULAR ARGUINEGUÍN
The race takes place once more in the neighbourhoods of Arguineguín with circuits of 5 and 10 km in a totally urban layout. Runners competing in the 5 km will make a single lap of the circuit, while those who choose 10 will run the route twice. The start and finishing line will be on calle Miguel Marrero Rodríguez with Avenida del Muelle.
The test, which will begin at 10:00, must be carried out in a maximum period of one and a half hours and will be under IAAF racing regulations. the children’s races will be held from 9:30 and until the departure of the main categories, in addition a solidarity walk starts at 11:30.
Remember that when there is a sporting event happening, it will cause traffic and parking restrictions in the area
