International Bach Festival – Las Palmas
Mar 25 – Jun 27 all-day

THE VIII EDITION OF THE IBF CANARIAS IN LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA 11-16 APRIL 2022

The International Bach Festival returns to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Festival will take place in iconic venues in the city, such as the Auditorium Alfredo Kraus or the Pérez Galdós Theater , and in renowned cultural spaces such as the Casa de Colón , the Literary Cabinet , the Fundación Mapfre Guanarteme or the Hotel Santa Catalina , which is once again the venue for an event that contributes to positioning the capital of Gran Canaria as a cultural urban destination.

The International Bach Festival Canarias (IBF) is held every year in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria under the impetus of the musicians of the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam . To them is added a group of young people with great projection, various choirs and international performers of recognized prestige. All of them develop an artistic, educational and social project with a vocation for permanence and expansion around the figure and work of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

The main program of this edition runs from March 25 to April 16, coinciding again with Holy Week (from April 10 to 17). This delivery of the event marks the return to its usual dates, after two years in which the pandemic forced the festival to be located in other sections of the calendar.

In total, 15 concerts have been scheduled in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The starring event will be Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas . It will be performed on April 13 at the Pérez Galdós Theater exclusively in Spain, with a staging by Peter Leung and a new prologue written for the occasion by the composer Meriç Artaç. Accompanying a cast of soloists of international stature, in the secondary roles the performance of several young Canarian performers will stand out, selected through an audition organized especially for the occasion. All of them will share the stage with the AINUR Chamber Choir and the IBF Orchestra under the musical direction of Michael Gieler.

Tickets to the concerts will be available at the ticket offices and websites of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium www.auditorioalfredokraus.es and the Pérez Galdós Theater www.teatroperezgaldos.es

“The International Bach Festival was founded in 2015 by musician friends from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and their colleagues from the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra. Both invite talented young musicians from all over Europe to perform together the great works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his fellow composers.”
