Fiesta del Pino 2021 – Teror
Aug 21 – Sep 26 all-day

Fiestas del Pino’ held in Teror, in Honour of Nuestra Señora del Pino (Our Lady of the Pine), patron of the island of Gran Canaria

Fiestas del Pino is perhaps the most important religious festival in The Canary Islands, celebrating Our Lady of The Pines, who is said to have revealed herself to some 16th century woodsmen and a priest, between two giant pine trees at place called Teror, where cool waters flowed from the mountains, and became known for their restorative properties.  Once the clergyman had reported the apparition to the Bishop, who then wrote to the Vatican, it was decided to bless this holy place with a church in her name, as luck would have it, sufficiently far enough away from marauding pirates as to be quite useful for storing gold and other treasures.  This year, like in 2020, will be a much more sombre affair than usual with events requiring a pre-reservation to participate.

The major fiesta held in Teror is the Fiesta in Honour of Nuestra Señora del Pino (Our Lady of the Pine), patron of the island of Gran Canaria. It dates back to the seventeenth century when the venerated statue of the Virgen del Pino was taken down to the island capital in order to add emphasis to their prayers for rain. By the eighteenth century pilgrimages had started to become one of the most popular events, and still these days they remain as one of the main attractions of this traditional fiesta. The meeting of the faithful and the procession-goers on the road to Teror throughout the night are now a custom that draws thousands of visitors and residents from across the islands.

If you are interested in any of the events, you can check the availability and reserve from: Tureservaonline.es and Entrees.es

Wednesday September 8 is a Bank holiday on Gran Canaria, Lady of the Pine, the Patron Saint of Gran Canaria.

This is a lovely little weekly market in the city centre and commercial area of Villa de Agüimes, ‘Mercadillo Municipal de Agüimes Casco‘ with numerous other services in its surroundings to explore. The market offers fresh products and beautiful crafts as well as textiles and floristry.

Every Thursday from 08:00 – 13:00 ( 07:00 – 14:00 )

*** From January 2020 the market moved to a new location at la plaza del Centro de Mayores, next to health center and behind the town hall.

With less that 10 minute walk from the market, take a stroll around the cobbled streets of the Agüimes old town with beautiful and interesting statues and sculptures scattered around and with history dating back to the conquest of the island, it is well worth a visit
