FEBRUARY | L’ELISIR D’AMORE

The Elixir of Love (original Italian title, L’elisir d’amore) is a comic opera in two acts with music by Gaetano Donizetti and an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on the libretto Le philtre (1831) by Eugène Scribe for the opera by Daniel François Aubert.
It premiered on May 12, 1832, at the Teatro Canobbiana in Milan.

Synopsis: L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love) is a comic opera in two acts that tells the story of the naive peasant Nemorino, who is in love with the rich and beautiful Adina. Flirtatious and sceptical, she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings and announces her engagement to Sergeant Belcore. Desperate, Nemorino buys a “love potion” (actually, cheap wine) from the charlatan Dulcamara, hoping to win her over. After several entanglements, misunderstandings, and an unexpected inheritance, Adina realises she truly loves Nemorino. Finally, love triumphs, and they end up together.

Opera in four acts with music by Giuseppe Verdi and an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare’s play ‘Othello, the Moor of Venice’. It was Verdi’s penultimate opera.
It premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887.

Synopsis: Othello is a lyrical tragedy in four acts based on Shakespeare’s play Othello. The story revolves around General Othello, who returns victorious from war and is lovingly welcomed by his wife, Desdemona. However, his envious lieutenant, Iago, resentful of not having been promoted, plots his downfall. He manipulates Othello into falsely believing that Desdemona is having an affair with the young officer Cassio. Consumed by jealousy, Othello murders Desdemona and, upon discovering the truth too late, takes his own life.


 

APRIL |  SIMON BOCCANEGRA

A three-act opera, with music by Giuseppe Verdi and a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, Giuseppe Montanelli, and Arrigo Boito (who revised the libretto), based on the play of the same name by Antonio García Gutiérrez.
The original version premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on March 12, 1857. Due to difficulties with the original plot, a revised version, with changes by Arrigo Boito, was first performed at La Scala in Milan on March 24, 1881.
Synopsis: Simon Boccanegra is an opera in three acts (plus a prologue) that blends political intrigue with family drama. Set in 14th-century Genoa, it tells the story of Simon Boccanegra, a former corsair who becomes Doge (ruler) of the city. Years earlier, he had a secret daughter with Maria, the daughter of his rival Jacopo Fiesco, but the child mysteriously disappeared.
When Simon assumes power, he discovers that Amelia, a young noblewoman, is in fact his long-lost daughter. However, political tensions between the patricians and plebeians, along with Fiesco’s enmity and the treachery of the ambitious Paolo, threaten to destroy everything. Finally, Simon and Fiesco reconcile before the Doge, poisoned by Paolo, dies peacefully, having secured his daughter’s future and the stability of the republic.


MAY | ANDREA CHÉNIER

A verismo opera set in a historical period, with music by Umberto Giordano and an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, based on the life of the French poet André Chénier (1762–1794), who was executed during the French Revolution.
Premiered at La Scala, Milan, on March 28, 1896.

Synopsis: Andrea Chénier is an opera in four acts set during the French Revolution, inspired by the real life of the poet André Chénier. The story begins at an aristocratic party, where Chénier, an idealist, criticises the injustices of the regime. There, he meets Maddalena di Coigny, a young noblewoman with whom he falls in love.

With the outbreak of the Revolution, social roles are reversed: Maddalena loses her status and her family, while Gérard, a former servant who secretly loved Maddalena, becomes a powerful revolutionary official. Although Gérard has Chénier arrested for political reasons, his love for Maddalena leads him to try to save him. Even so, Chénier is condemned to death.


 

JUNE | TURANDOT

Opera in three acts with music by Giacomo Puccini and an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. The opera, left unfinished at Puccini’s death, was completed by Franco Alfano.
Premiered on April 25, 1926, at La Scala in Milan.

Synopsis: Turandot is an opera in three acts (unfinished at Puccini’s death and completed by Franco Alfano), set in a mythical China. The cold and ruthless Princess Turandot has sworn never to marry unless her suitor solves three riddles; if he fails, he will be executed. Many have died trying.
An unknown prince, Calaf, accepts the challenge and solves the three riddles. Turandot, bewildered, is unwilling to keep her promise. Calaf, offering her a way out, proposes a challenge: if she discovers his name before dawn, he will renounce marriage and accept death. Turandot tries to uncover it, even torturing the faithful slave Liù, who is in love with Calaf and commits suicide to protect her secret.
Finally, Turandot surrenders to love and declares that she knows the prince’s name: “Love.” The opera concludes with a celebration of Turandot’s redemption through love.
