Fiestas de Guayadeque 2024 – Agüimes
Guayadeque in the municipality of Agüimes is celebrating their Beñesmén festivities in honour of San Bartolomé (Saint Bartholomew) between 18-24 August 2024. The program includes festive street parties and the traditional Traída de la Leche’ (bringing the milk) which will take place along the local road until reaching the square.
Few corners on Gran Canaria connect us as much with our history and our nature as Guayadeque. This neighbourhood festivity, traditionally dedicated to Beñesmén and San Bartolomé and in homage to the indigenous past of this unique enclave and also in honour of the patron saint whose image presides over the small hermitage of the place.
The Guayadeque ravine was the scene of life and death for the ancient Canarians for centuries. Numerous remains of the houses, granaries and graves that the indigenous population dug into its slopes are still preserved. Combined with its rugged geography and the overwhelming beauty of its landscapes, the cultural heritage of the ancient Canarians gives Guayadeque an ancestral imprint to which its inhabitants still cling.
In homage to these historical roots, the local festivities continue to commemorate the Beñesmén, the summer celebration of the ancient Canarians, the time of the year when they harvested their wheat and barley crops.
