Fiestas patronales del Rosario 2024 – Agüimes

The historic centre of Agüimes is decked out to celebrate, as every year at this time, its patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, co-patron saint and perpetual mayor of the municipality.

The scheduled events, which will last until 14 October, will start on Friday, 20 September in the Auditorium Theatre with the presentation of the new book by Fernando Romero, historian and official chronicler of the municipality, dedicated to recounting the most relevant events of the first years at the head of the Town Hall of Antonio Morales, former mayor of Agüimes, favourite son of the municipality and current president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. After the presentation, which will take place at 20:00, the singer Pedro Manuel Afonso will perform, accompanied on this occasion by the Agüimes Municipal Music Band.

The first of the popular gatherings for these festivities will take place this Saturday, September 21, starting at 17:00 where young and old will meet to remember the old work of the fields. They will strip and shell the corn to later take the grain to the mills of Lolita and Ananías, on the way to Guayadeque, remembering the task that families of yesteryear carried out when they wanted to transform the millet they harvested into gofio. After complying with the custom, upon returning to the square you will be able to enjoy, starting at 20:00, the taifa dance to which you are invited to attend in traditional Canarian clothing. There will be tables and chairs for those who want to attend in a group and with food, by prior reservation via email to [email protected] .

The millo, now made into gofio, will return to the town the following week, on Saturday 28 September, with the celebration of the 47th edition of the Traída del Gofio y del Agua. Hundreds of people will once again gather to make the journey from the Lolita and Ananías mills to the historic centre. Due to its uniqueness, the Traída is always the most eagerly awaited event of these festivities, declared of National Tourist Interest. Next in popularity is the Romería Ofrenda a la Virgen del Rosario, which this year will be celebrated on Saturday 5 October.

Other highlights of the programme will be concerts by Vocal Siete (2 October), Althay Páez (3 October) and Los Granjeros (6 October), as well as the Noche Joven (4 October), which will include a tribute to Coldplay and a performance by St. Pedro. There will also be exhibitions, street parties, local sports, folklore performances, children’s activities, documentary screenings and literary presentations
