Día de Canarias celebrations in Mogán

Mogán celebrates the Canary Islands Day during 2 days and includes the exhibition and sale of craftwork and gastronomic products, Canarian folklore and the tribute to the neighbor Antonio Medina ‘El Piquino’, a fisherman for more than six decades. The events will take place on May 29 and 30 in the neighborhoods of Arguineguín and Playa Mogán respectively.

On Wednesday, May 29 starting at 18:00 an ethnographic exhibition that includes an exhibition of craft work as well as various stalls for tasting and selling of local products such as honey, cheese, traditional pastries, and also traditional work. During the same day held in the Plaza de Las Marañuelas in Arguineguín, there will be a traditional music in which the Folklore Classroom of the Artistic Schools of Mogán and the Parrandas Arguín-Pino Seco, Los Pescadores and Guayajares will participate, which will animate the day with the most characteristic rhythms and lyrics of Canarian music.

On Thursday, Dia de Canarias at 20:30 at the Plaza Pedro Pedro Betancor León in Playa de Mogán there is traditional music and games from the local students of the Folklore Classroom, the performance of the Parranda de Veneguera and craft stalls of the Aborart association.

In this edition of the program of events for the Day of the Canary Islands will be honored Don Antonio Medina Santana, popularly known as ‘El Piquino’, fisherman and resident in the municipality for 65 years. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1936, at age 18 he settled in Arguineguín where he worked in the harvest of tuna and fishing with pots and trañas. Over time he specialized in the weaving and repair of nets and pots, work for which he showed great skill and which led sailors from all over the island to come to him and know him as ‘the artisan of the sea’.

Expo Mogán

The streets of the historic centre of the town of Pueblo de Mogán will host the sixth edition of ‘Expo Mogán’ between 1-2 June. Concerts, exhibitions, a market, various performances, an appetising gastronomy route, artisans.

The event is aimed at all ages and audiences, with an exclusive space for the little ones in the family, the ‘ChiquiExpo’, with various activities, such as the children’s playroom, games and traditional toys, and workshops.

Calle San José and Calle Juan Martín will be pedestrianized and closed to traffic. As in previous years, parking in the upper area of the town of Mogán.

Fifty days after Easter Monday the Festivities of San Vicente Ferrer , patron of the municipality, are celebrated, commemorating the day on which the saint was brought from the Church of Teror to his final parish in Valleseco. Depending on the dates of celebration of Holy Week, these holidays may fall in mid-May or early June. This year this date falls on Monday June 10. During these events, different events take place, such as musical performances, plays, popular festivals, cattle fairs, painting exhibitions, etc.

Main days of the festivities:

Saturday 8 June, a day for the whole family, from 11.00, Children’s Party “Pa to the day” with inflatables, Dolls Show and Workshops.
At 17.00 the Third Festival Holi Pal Color, with the participation of DJ Antonio Boada. Finishing with the musical show “Los 80 a mi manera” by Patricia Muñoz.

On Sunday 9 June, there is the Egg and Pincha de la Sidra Festival, a day with the distribution of more than 1500 hard boiled eggs for all attendees and the spicha of cider, with about 500 liters of the local cider. With the performances of Los Sabandeños and the group Los 600, ending the day with the show “Ayer, Hoy y Siempre”, remembering Antonio Machín.

The big day, Monday 10th, traditional Cattle Exhibition Fair, where a large number of farmers from different parts of the island attend, this fair-exhibition being one of the greatest achievements for the promotion of livestock in general.

Later, in the main street of the town at 13.30, will be the delivery of prizes by the municipal and island authorities to the best copies of the fair, then, pig roast party

Finalizing with a tribute to the teachers of the municipality, and the performances of the group Atlantida and Los Gofiones.

The main street in Pueblo de Mogán will be decorated in June to celebrate the local patron saint festivities. The San Antonio El Chico- festivities program integrates tradition, culture, sports, leisure with the participation of many residents in the organisation of activities.

The program of festivities includes musical shows and activities for children, traditional children’s games, traditional games for adults, comedy shows, fiestas and concerts.

On Saturday 8 June 2019, Romeria, the pilgrimage will be offered to San Antonio El Chico ( Saint Anthony, the boy) , in which numerous old fashioned carts, parrandas and groupings of locals all dressed in traditional costume will participate. Usually starting at 19:00.
It is important to remember that all people who attend this pilgrimage “respect the tradition and go properly dressed in traditional clothing.” Thus, those people who do not wear traditional clothing will be required to stay outside the margins defined for the route of the pilgrimage.
