September 28 – 30
This year this epic event celebrates Women, Fighters, Survivors, and their Families.
Now in its 7th year, following an initiative in 2011 started by the local English newspaper to raise funds for the Canarian Breast Cancer and Gynecological Cancer Association, the ACCMyG.org
The success of that event in bringing the community together led to a solidarity walk from Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria to Amadores and back again the following year, which was well received and supported, leading directly to a small team attempting to walk from Puerto Rico to Roque Nublo in the middle of the island. They’ve been crossing the island annually ever since, raising tens of thousands of euros for worthy causes.
This year the plan is to walk coast-to-coast from the north western shores of Telde back to where it all began on the south west of the island, to Puerto Rico. Raising funds this year for ACCMyG.org and for the Mogán Neighbours Food Bank project, Nabojhelpen, who directly assist local families in need.
The primary route of The Long Walk 2018 will start on the morning of Friday September 28 at the mouth of the Royal Barranco de Telde, heading inland toward the ancient capital, through the beautiful old town of San Juan, and through the neighbourhood of San Gregorio, in the centre of modern day Telde, and then up the valley further inland heading towards Lomo Margullo and Valsequillo.
Stopping for the night at Las Vegas and El Pedregal, The Long Walk will continue on Day Two through the ancient community of Tenteniguada, to ascend El Roque Grande to Cuevas Grandes and on up to El Pico del Las Nieves, the highest summit on Gran Canaria, before the descent, via la Candelilla, and to the epic beauty of the Chira reservoir, where the teams will sleep on the second night.
Day 3, Sunday September 30, begins with a stroll through the undergrowth of barranco de Chira and then into the eerie Chira overflow drain, an unlit 1.2km hand bored tunnel running straight through the mountain between Chira and the largest reservoir in the Canary Islands at Soria; before heading down through the Baranquillo Andrés, at the head of the Arguineguín valley, to meet nearly 100 tour reps, supporters and volunteers who will join us for the final 15km down to Puerto Rico, where we hope to be met by more supporters and participants of The Puerto Rico Walk at the Shopping Center Puerto Rico around 6pm on Sunday evening, for a final leg to Playa de Amadores and back again to celebrate Women, Survivors, Fighters and Families in Need and an epic achievement for another year.
Participate by walking with them, buy an official t-shirt, hold your own fundraiser, give a donation, sponsor a walker, dress up and join in, decorate Puerto Rico (or any part of our route) with pink ribbons and well wishes)
Think Pink for October!
